It just depends on how vulnerable your computing practices are. Because of drive-by malvertising, if you generally surf the web, click on voat links that may or may not be to reputable sites, or receive and open files from unknown sources (unsolicited e-mail, usb drives) or someone else using your computer might be doing potentially risky stuff, then you would be wise to apply any actual security updates. In the real world, not applying patches doesn't mean you'll be exploited, and applying all the patches doesn't make you invulnerable. It's all a risk management calculation that each organization or person would have to make for themselves. There is no universal answer.
