Brave lets you choose; you can see ads as served by the site, "clean" ads served through Brave's ad program, or no ads at all. If you choose no ads, you can also choose if you want to pay sites (automatically from your built-in Bitcoin wallet) or just have Brave act like a standard ad blocker.

I think it is a really good step in the right direction and am considering using the Brave-served ads in order to support the sites I like. But you can choose differently.

I'm skeptical that site owners actually get the bitcoins. How many site owners have signed up vs how many sites have been visited a day? Smells like BS to me.

I have no idea how many sites have signed up but they don't need to (sort of) for the Bitcoin to be earmarked for them. Basically, if a site isn't signed up, once it hits a certain amount of earmarked coins, Brave emails the site owner asking him/her to register.
