It's just another instant message service. Bill Gates is right, there is no value in Slack other than the users. It's just one of many services out there. That said, even if Microsoft snuffs them out, there is no guarantee that these people will turn to a microsoft product instead.

Smart move. $3.8 billion is absurd valuation. You can't buy every competitor that pops up. Make the one you already bought better. I stopped using Skype because of shit call quality, shit interface, and it's major resource hogging. Jumped over to discus and it's been pretty fucking great. EDIT: Discord not Discus.,
Where in the fuck does it say they are trying to kill it (besides the click bait title)? Trying to compete with it? of course, that is what businesses do but this quote right here from the article is more accurate than the click baity title.
"Gates' argument was that Microsoft would be better served taking Skype, which it bought for $8.5 billion in 2011, and using it as the launchpad for a Slack competitor."
Microsoft Skype Teams vs. Slack - Business Insider
'Much like Slack, Skype Teams offers "channels," which are different chat rooms for groups like sales, marketing, or product. '
'A key difference is "threaded conversations," MSPoweruser reports, which helps organize conversations by making it look more like a Facebook comment thread. '
'MSPoweruser has what appear to be Skype Teams screenshots that it claims were obtained from Microsoft employees. '
'Otherwise, Skype Teams and Slack look to offer a similar vibe, including the ability to make voice calls straight from the chat window. '
'Eventually, MSPoweruser reports, Skype Teams will make its way to the Office 365 suite as part of the monthly subscription for businesses, as well as potentially being available as a standalone product. '

So what? Slack is just another IM platform. There isn't anything special about it. There are thousands of them, and they've been around for what? Thirty years? Microsoft can't kill it, but it isn't going to change the world either.
We have it at work and I don't understand all the fuss over it. It has apps, which makes me like it even less. Our whole phone system will be run through Skype for Business anyways, so what's the point?

$3.8 billion for an underwhelming chat client? I have a half-eaten pizza in the fridge, maybe I should offer to sell it to Microsoft for $1k.
