Allow me to summarize this article:

"The headphone jack is going to be gone because the companies will decide to remove it for whatever shit they shovel at us and we should accept it, even if it allows them more control over the equipment we supposedly own. Also it costs 10 whole cents and wears out."

I wish that was hyperbole. I really, really do.

And if Apple does it everyone will, because everyone copies Apple. Really? Really? That's the argument?

Seriously - a better argument is that the headphone jack is preventing phones from becoming slimmer. I personally think if phones get any slimmer they'll become too fragile, but I can at least see the logic.

"Cuz Apple" isn't really a well formed assertion

Being a loyal paying customer at every major release, I'm jumping ship to Android. It's been real Apple, but your products aren't cutting edge anymore and we have options. Hello Nexus! (Yes, the headphone jack was the deciding factor)

BS, on not needing digital/analog conversion. You need that to play tunes through the speaker anyway.

Not only does this eliminate the headphone jack itself, but also the analog to digital circuitry that it requires.

Can't wait for my ears to directly listen to digital audio.

it costs money, and it's still a potential failure point

A description that applies to every feature. Good thinking, Adrian.

Because annoying millennials feel the need to share EVERYTHING with the people around them including their horrible music, and if you don't like it you're a somethingphobic whateverist who's privilegesplaining their reclaimed space and agency.

No, it's because headphone jacks cost money, and blue tooth and USB 3 can replace the headphone jack.

Oh, so it's not just going to be blasting out of the speakers? I've been in too many lines at the DMV and doctor's office waiting rooms where these stupid college kids just let their Kendrick Lamar or whatever play at the highest volume without any concern for the other people there.

The headphone jack will take a lot longer to replace. By switching to a digital output, few to no audio players will be compatible with your device. Every single set of headphones, earbuds, or vintage audio gear will require not only a USB-C/digital input, but a digital audio converter (DAC). Right now, all phones have these built-in because the headphone jack requires an analog signal. By not having a DAC, the digital to analog signal conversion needs to occur elsewhere. This would lead to a large number of battery-powered DAC/Amplifiers that would be necessary to convert the digital signal and then power the headphones/earbuds. As is, most modern cellphones have pretty weak amplifiers.

However some phone makers know that people who care about audio and are doing some pretty innovative things. By offering premium DAC's in their phones (like LG announced today) or HTC's 10, the customers who have invested in audio systems have devices that perfectly fit their needs.

There is literally no one except for greedy product designers/manufacturers who find this appealing.

puts on tin foil hat

Also, don't forget that Apple owns Beats. It's almost like they are working together to generate profit for both sides.

just change the connector with every phone release so everyone has to buy new beats if they want to listen.

sounds like a solid plan

Ugh, can't wait for pointless higher end DACs to become the next marketing point in the smartphone world.
