Is android snappy and responsive now?
A few years ago I wouldn't touch android because it was noticeably slower than it's Apple counterparts. Swiping to different screens. Scrolling through a webpage. Android was just laggy.
I'm all for customization and the other features android provides. But using did not feel good. Have things changed?
How much better would you say lollipop is than kitkat on the One? I'm still using kitkat on my Oneplus One, but I'm thinking it might time to update...
Were you using a Nexus device or something from Samsung maybe?
Touchwiz was really bloated a few years ago. When I got my SGS2 it was slow as hell and felt like garbage. I put Cyanogenmod on it and it was night and day faster.
Vendors like Samsung, HTC, etc all put their own skin over Android. Some are OK, HTC's Sense seems pretty nice on my One, but Touchwiz on my friends Galaxy S5 was really out there.
It's good as long as it doesn't have a bloated UI. Most have gotten then back under wraps, but Samsung was about as snappy as an old Volvo with flat tires back in the day.

My cousin just got an iPhone 6 because he felt android was way too laggy. I think he is missing out!
