I use ninite to download essentials now. I don't know if there's any sourceforge-like websites worth paying attention to though.

Life is so much simpler when you can just type

sudo apt-get install foo

Whenever I'm directed to SourceForge to download something, this comic comes to mind https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/file_extensions.png

I've not had a concrete reason to avoid it in the past other than that it looked like a sleazy video streaming site, but this doesn't surprise me.

If the file is ONLY stored on SourceForge (or at least SourceForge is the only linked source for said file on most places), what do you do to get it without the malware?

Go without.

  1. Download the source code and build your own binaries without the crappy malware bundle.
  2. Search on Wikipedia for the name of the program, and follow the link from there to the project's official web site. Get your download link from the official web site. If that link points to Sourceforge then see 1 or 3.
  3. Join the project's IRC channel and ask the devs where trustworthy builds are hosted. Make sure to mention why you don't trust SourceForge.
  4. I have never tried it, but I've read about Ninite
  5. I have never tried it, but I've read about Chocolatey

You can always scan for malware on VirusTotal, Metascan, and Jotti. When you do you will be given one or more hash codes you can use to compare with other users.

As an advanced user, is it possible to just get the desired file without the installer?

As an advanced user, you could download the source code and compile it yourself without the crappy malware bundle. You're better off just getting your binaries from a trustworthy source. If you have any doubt about where the official repositories are hosted, jump on IRC and ask the developers themselves.
