"Imgur is the only site that can possibly compete with Reddit at the moment."

*looks around*

*pets a goat*

I beg to differ.

We don't need competition. Im ok with being small Monaco. Let France burn in SJW Flames while we race ferraris and drink champagne.

Unrelated: who the hell did you piss off to get downvoats on that?

Wow Motherboard totally missed the fact that Andreessen Horowitz is invested in both Reddit and Imgur. So basically, two Andreessen Horowitz startups are now competing against each other, no matter what happens Andreessen Horowitz wins.

I remember when Mr. Grim (I think that's his username) built imgur for the people on reddit. It was so nice to have an alternative to imageshack, etc. Now they are both SJW infested. How the times change. sli.mg is better.

Yeah, it was MrGrimm. Thought there were two m's? It's been a while, I could be wrong. But yeah, when it was made it was because everything at the time sucked - loads of ads, images would get pulled, load times sucked. So he made a simple image host. Then it got huge... now it has loads of ads, images get pulled, and there are loads of issues on mobile. It became the thing it was designed to replace.

True, but Imgur was founded as an image hosting site for Reddit, and the ties between Reddit and Imgur were probably a large part of why the Reddit admins thought that they could ban FPH in the first place, so this is still big news.

I think both reddit an imgur have recently gotten serious about advertizing. Before it didn't matter who's service was used the most if both were used in a session of browser. Now they need more time with the user in front of the screen.

In other words, they used to only care about monthly and daily uniques and now they care about bounce rate.

I think the fact that they aren't growing is what shifted those gears. They want to cash in on what they've built because that's the only direction they can go from here.

Imgur has started becoming more like reddit, where you can vote and comment and reply to people. A lot of the people there realized that it's easier to just stay on imgur than it is to go back and forth between it and reddit. It basically became a direct competitor to reddit.

[–] tame 0 points 6 points (+6|-0) ago

This. A large proportion of reddit posts are links to imgur, plus maybe some text. Essentially, reddit was imgur's comment section (used to even be a direct link 'see discussion on reddit' under the picture on imgur) and everyone was happy. Then imgur started working on their own comment section to the point where reddit was redundant. Now both are million-dollar corporations run by advertising MBAs and they're doing what MBAs do (being incapable of actually creating value of their own), which is try to increase profits by reducing competition by acting anticompetitively.

A lot of redditors have been running into usability issues with imgur, and their mobile site quality has degraded a great amount

Yeah fuck Imgur, slow piece of shit with all it's unnecessary junk "features". It used to be fast and smooth when it was just an image hosting website, not a corporate ad monster.
