Did it screw things up so bad that there was no way to, say, boot into Linux and copy the data to another disk from there? I'm genuinely curious as to just how bad a Windows 10 upgrade can get (although in extreme circumstances it can get really awful, I'm sure).

No, once I informed the client that I could not do the "auto" thingy (yes I used those words!) the decision was to keep 10.... so I went thru the privacy settings (and others) and made it as good as I could, got the printer working and told them about the perils of just upgrading things... and left. I'm sure I will get another call but I had 3 other existing clients to see that day.
I could have easily copied the data/ wiped and installed 7, just more money than they wanted to spend.
