If you look at Reddit and think to yourself "hmm, this needs more censorship," then you have a serious problem.

The irony here is that Voat is a safe space. People need to start accepting that.

Fuck off cunt. Voat is only a safe space through obscurity not design.

It's like saying you are keeping your family jewels in a box 6' underground in the mojavi dessert. Are they a in a secure location? Yes, but when they add a freeway across that spot, not so much.

IMzy is basically like putting your family jewels in a bank vault. You are intentionally protecting and creating a secure space for your jewels that should never be breached. Of course bank robbers will bank rob ;)

Now, you don't have to leave voat and you are not going to be banned, but you should be aware you are a massive cunt. Why say that? Because your obscurity just got broken and you are no longer safe from me calling you a cunt, or a fag, or whatever upsets you.

Seriously though I hope you get the point. You are not wrong, but ideally one day you would be.

There is night-and-day difference between "I get downvoated for an unpopular opinion" and "I get banned for an unpopular opinion".

Get your head out of your ass.

You wanna get right what Reddit got wrong?

  • Get rid of the weighted voting system. Giving topics and comments more weight based on how many people click the "agree" button and outright hiding things that a few people decided they didn't like creates a natural echo chamber. This is even worse on Reddit because of their dumb-ass vote algorithm that naturally boosts posts that get upvoted early, making gaming the system fucking child's play.

  • Listen when people complain about mod abuse. When you have a constant stream of legitimate complaints ranging from censorship to harassment, it might be a good idea to think about showing some people the door.

  • Be transparent. Like, actually transparent. Tell people what you're doing, why you're doing it, what repercussions it will have, and listen to their feedback. You don't have to agree with them, but they are essentially your customers and they very much will leave. Don't reduce everything to corporate doublespeak and marketing bullshit.

  • Don't sell your soul to advertisers and allow them to basically be half the contributing force behind the content on your site. There's nothing wrong with ads, there's plenty wrong with disguising ads as legitimate content.

  • BE FUCKING CONSISTENT. That means rules apply to fucking EVERYONE. If you ban someone for something, you ban anyone who does that thing. Leave your fucking nepotism and bias at the door. Rules and standards should be equilateral.

  • Invest in server infrastructure that can actually handle the load of your website when something even moderately newsworthy happens.

  • Avoid investment from corporate sources. They will want a return on their investment at some point and that usually comes at a direct cost to the people who visit your site in the form of data mining or other shady practices. There are plenty of people who will contribute to a community that they like to keep it alive if you maintain the quality that they expect.

  • Don't try to compete with every other fucking site on the internet. Know your role, play it. Don't try to be a jack-of-all trades and constantly on the hunt for the next cheap trick to get a few more nickels in your pocket or a failed attempt to usurp someone who is already doing something better than you.

I've spent a lot of time on internet communities. I've seen what works, I've seen what doesn't.
Everything always has some big flaw.

“I loved some of the community aspects of Reddit, but what I didn’t love was all of the strife that went on inside, and outside, of the company,” said Mr. McComas, 41. “We had serious problems with harassment.”

So you think harassment is a terrible thing , and the best way to be rid of it is to constantly harass those you disagree with. Sounds like he is the toxic one.

Imzy tries to combat some of those issues through the site’s architecture. When someone signs up, they are directed to pick a few specific communities they want to join.

Reminds me of Pinterest.

Imzy has partnered with other culture groups and celebrities, including the “Girls” creator Lena Dunham,

Yeah, no.

So we've essentially redefined troll to mean "anyone that disagrees with me?"

Good lord, I remember back in the old days on Something Awful when screaming "troll" at someone just for disagreeing with you would result in a ban.
