Oh, I definitely agree. It’s a great pity too. I once ordered 100 Ubuntu CDs to distribute locally, back when downloading a 600MB image would’ve been a pain. Now they’ve clearly demonstrated their intent to be a closed/commercial system. It doesn’t make sense to switch from Windows to Ubuntu; you might as well stay on Windows and enjoy the bigger library of proprietary software.
Here’s hoping another easy-to-use distro will take Ubuntu’s place to make transitioning easier. Too many distros are based on Ubuntu making real choice difficult.

The other two suggested above are viable options. I've seen a lot of users transition to Mint. First distro I did was Fedora, and that's wasn't that big of an issue.
