You can also just hit the reload and then the stop loading (basically a slow double click on the reload page button), then read the article.
I understand that they think they are attracting advertisers by requiring users to have the ads loaded, but they are decreasing their overall traffic by doing this, thus making them a less desirable site to advertise on. The should just use the "drudge technique", reload the page every 10 seconds and claim a new hit each time....then they can falsely claim "2 billion clicks per year"

Fun fact: on a lot of sites, that overlay is just another element you can select and block. It brings me great joy to block those crybaby windows.
