I think it's funny that this guy is surprised. They've been doing this kind of crap forever. They did this with iPods. They'd wipe it and delete everything from it. Now they're just doing the same crap on people's computers and they can't believe it. These kinds of subscription/cloud products always end up being crap. That's why I have my own personal library and Foobar2000. If I want to stream I just use an exclusive streaming service like Pandora.

Edit: Extra shout-out to EAC and flac. Rip your CDs to flac and you'll have an "exact" copy. You can replace lost CDs and you can listen to your whole collection uncompressed.

Yass, I love FOOBAR. I downloaded it a couple weeks ago and by far my favorite part is the visualizers.

Like some people i know who used myspace to store the only copy of their childs baby photos, then they got shitty when i pointed out how stupid this was, even worse when myspace deleted the photos for inactivity.

I like Mediamonkey. Syncs well with android, so I just use my phone with a big SD card instead of some shitty media player device for portable music.

I like OSX as an operating system. But I don't use any of the subscription or cloud shit that comes with it. I force delete the apps I don't need, get media through my posh private trackers, ???, and profit.

It's not just apple. A great deal of developers now act as though they own any device their software runs on, or at the very least that the consumer does not. It's a cancerous attitude that can't even be discussed in normal circles without accusations of hysteria and paranoia getting thrown out.

What do fuckers using "cloud" based streaming services expect? Stop giving people control of your stuff and just expecting they won't fuck you.

Further down in the article he says he did have a backup. But I bet most people do not.

You learnt that expensive lesson, too, huh. How much data did you lose? I had a hdd failure, back in the day and apparently the external had crapped out, since the last back-up, as well.

Now all my important shit is backed up to two 2-TB externals and MediaFire.

Umm, well I expect to be able to stream music from the cloud, like with Google Music or Pandora, both of which I have used.

What I would never expect is for those services to, without my explicit permission, decide which of my LOCAL data "really ought to be up in the cloud instead," move it there, run an inaccurate de-dupe effort to save someone else's hard drive space that I didn't ask for in the first place, and then DELETE my stuff locally. Is that unreasonable?

I mean, I have Netflix, as the blog author points out I don't expect for them to come and steal all my DVDs or replace the special editions with the standard fare...

Just because it's not ethical doesn't mean it won't happen. Do you leave your car running and unlocked because it wouldn't be right for someone to come along and drive off with it?

I built myself a freenas box. I have owncloud on it. Plex. All my music and other media. I have real networking gear and can access it from anywhere I have an internet connection. I've also got a full fledged server that I have VMware esxi6 on. Next step will be pulling my email off Google and self hosting.

This might be a bit much to ask but could you write a brief how to do your set up? Something a noob like me could follow.

I pretty much did the same thing. I've eliminated one of my two Google accounts too. No Facebook, no Twitter, no Linkedin, no Snapchat, no anything. Next project is moving to mostly all cash purchases.

There's plenty of free music out there, even without the legal complications, like bandcamp, or the Weeklybeats.

I pity them, but it is not always up to them what they can make use of.

I have very little sympathy. People have warned of Apple's terrible TOS for the better part of a decade now. Just because they hadn't yet done everything they are legally allowed to do according to the ToS you agrred to in the past, doesn't mean they would never do such terrible things later on.

Everyone has been warned to stay away from Apple's walled garden. If you are still a voluntary victim of Apple's practices, anything you lose is due to your own apathy and ignorance.

Meh, there are three products I really love from Adobe. Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects. And I have yet to find a better alternative for any of those 3 products.

a while back i was using an older iteration of itunes. i thought it was alright, not too much better or worse than other music suites.

i've always had my music well organized on my tertiary drive. albums here, miscellaneous singles there, etc. then one day i decide to format my OS drive to upgrade. when i boot with the new OS (of which i won't mention, i'm a gamer), i find that all my music is gone. it turned out that itunes fucking moved all my music from my tertiary drive into an itunes folder on my OS drive. i never noticed because i rarely add music to my ~3gb collection. i've always felt that loss. i'm sure there was music on there i liked that i just don't remember anymore. i'd only ever used an ipod before that, but since that event, i've had absolutely nothing to do with apple, except to disparage them and their cult of personality wherever appropriate.

fuck you right up your ass, apple. i hate you and what you do, and i hate the shitty hardware plus mediocre software you sell for 10 times what it's worth.

Hard disks are pretty cheap nowadays, backups are the first thing people should do when buying a computer, but hams like you prefer to spend money shovelling food down their gullets.

Priorities.

hams? like a fat person? i'm not sure where you got that. i was a little kid, like 10 years old. that was fifteen years ago. hard drives were not cheap then. more significantly, a fourth grader isn't going to be thinking about contingencies. obviously i have backups now.

Or just get yourself a raid controller (with another HDD) and set yourself up on a raid 1. Almost double the reading speed (which is typically what people seek to begin with) and quite secure. Not as fast as an SSD but much cheaper and still fast enough
