We need more details when you post. When in doubt, add more relevant details. Rules differ depending on the circumstances. So if you are talking about a form, mention the form name and line number you have a question about. If you have a question about a schedule, mention that schedule name and line number you are referring to.
Also add: What research did you do to figure out the question? Which IRS forms, instructions, or publications did you read? What are the publication numbers and links? Help us help you.
Critical things we need:
- Your age. The employment rules can change for minors.
- Do your parents take you as an exemption? If so, you cannot take your own exemption on your own tax forms. You cannot double dip.
- Are you using tax software? What's the name of the software? What is the problem? Does the tax software give you a different calculation than a paper form you filled out?
- Are you married right now? Has your divorce been finalized? If your divorce has not been finalized you are still married as far as IRS filing goes.
