All pro football games are fixed. HBO did a show on it. Two times in court it has been ruled that pro football is just like championship wrestling, not a sport but entertainment and it's perfectly legal for the owners to get together prior to the game and decide who is going to win.

Edit: it's not necessarily a mistake, more of a gamble that failed.

In overtime, both teams get a chance to have the ball if the first team to have it is unable to score. Typically, you'd expect coaches to elect to receive first, and thus have the first chance at scoring. The Patriots won the toss and elected to kick off first (not receive), gambling that their defense could hold. The defense did not hold, and they lost the game.

It's worth noting that the Patriots coach (Belichick) has a reputation for coming up with pretty non-standard strategies to out-maneuver or out-smart opponents. I feel like he was trying to do that here, but it clearly didn't pan out.

How would this move by the coach be considered strategic in any way?

But whatever, football's overtime rules are just about the stupidest I've seen in any sport. Give possession to one team and if they score they win, without the possibility for the other team to answer.

My fellow Lions fans are smiling, in a sad sort of way.

We've won like every Olympics since like ever. Maybe you can take a lesson or two.

Or just watch a buncha grown men roll around pretending to cry and call that a great sport.
