My point is that they're saying, "life doesn't exist elsewhere because their planets can't sustain life long enough for intelligent life to develop", when that's just bogus. Out of the billions and billions of planets, to say that not a single one of them was able to harbor life - while Earth is unique in that it could - is totally bogus to me.

They are trying to explain the apparent rarity of intelligent life, they are not claiming that every single planet aside from ours is dead.
