Life on other planets would likely be brief and become extinct very quickly
Just like on Earth, right?
These scientists seem to believe that Earth is one of the planets with life in the entire universe, based off very little actual knowledge of other planets that exist, despite the fact that Earth is relatively young. If there are other planets capable of hosting life, chances are they, like Earth, do. There seems to be a lack of reason in this article, IMO.
My point is that they're saying, "life doesn't exist elsewhere because their planets can't sustain life long enough for intelligent life to develop", when that's just bogus. Out of the billions and billions of planets, to say that not a single one of them was able to harbor life - while Earth is unique in that it could - is totally bogus to me.
They are trying to explain the Fermi paradox, the idea that despite the likely high number of habitat planets we still haven't found any signs of intelligent life.
They are working from the idea that we are seeing less signs of life than we would expect and trying to explain why.

Which might mean Earth has enough metal to sustain life.
