Yeah, I hear that. I could imagine some sort of splinter organization - somebody figures out a way to monetize Mars to the extent that it would be worth it to set up shop there, and the splinter could be backed by a huge bankroll established on Earth. But perhaps in that situation the splinter would be forced into autonomy, rather than still being directed by Earth overseers.
On a slightly different tack, I think people are wary of Earth laws holding jurisdiction beyond Earth. In the above hypothetical the Mars splinter would obviously maintain common goals with their parent company, but that already exists with companies here on Earth with their hands in the cookie jar in multiple countries. Each country has distinct laws that corporations must obey. Martian government would define their own codes and laws, and corporations would be held to those. Those restrictions wouldn't preclude the possibility for profit on that planet.
