Well whenever a country tried to do that here, it didn't go well. Look at history, it us the same as going to the new world, except this time it is a new world.

The colonizing organization could themselves be your self-governed entity after seceding from Earth. Those who made the tech and time investment to make Mars comfy wouldn't have to remove themselves from Mars, but rather remove themselves from Earth. Those who govern a place should be in that place to be most viscerally connected to its needs and successes. This philosophy would exclude foreign (Earthly) governance.

Initially? no, no more than Australia, USA, or Canada was independent when first colonized. Over time Mars may become independent, or perhaps autonomous, or even part of some sort of solar system federation with Earth as an equal partner. Only time will tell.

Might be wishful thinking, but I sincerely hope it's never colonised by earth based governments. Even the smaller ones have large enough cartels as it is.

It will probably need to be a colony at least until it can be self sufficient. At which point, we will discover a new era of space warfare. Which will be awesome. (and awful of course).

It's up to the people who'll live there eventually. If an Earth based government makes a law for Mars citizens who'll enforce it? The Martian people could just say "Nah, fuck that".

i wanna say, until we have technology of the aliens film. the atmospheric processors and Hadleys hope (http://avp.wikia.com/wiki/Hadley%27s_Hope) we just wont be able to live there. your entire lifes will be spent on repairing, generating oxygen, maintaining heating systems, dealing with disasters like loss of pressurization. it would be a enormous feat for even a large country to do such a thing if there was a place like that on earth.

Yay, another shitty link that doesn't lead to an article! Fantastic job OP.

Why would we want either planet to be a single political union? I'll be disappointed if mars doesn't end up with more than the pitiful 200 political entities we have.
