No it wasn't. The United States was never meant to have a standing military. The militia was meant to be the defence of the nation.

There is actually some confusion on this. It's frequently stated incorrectly, as you have. Technically, there is always supposed to be a standing army. But it's supposed to be small and largely made of up officers. This is because our Founders understood that a militia is generally not a match for a professional soldier. As such, they understood that there must be some form of military who can provide an immediate response while the militias come together. Also, they understood that professionals need be available to handle things like logistical needs and supply. At the time, it was well understood that wars are won by logistics and leadership.

So when they say no standing army, they really mean no standing army of considerable size. BUT... they also understood that the militia need have force parity with any potential standing army. Remember, there are no powers which prohibit it. They were rather pragmatic about it.

When it's stated there is no standing army, they actually mean no large, occupying force. Not that there isn't any military at all. You'll find the military, especially the navy, which created the marines, have a very long lived history throughout the history of the country.

It was meant to defend the individual states from the fed gov.

Yes it was, but it was never meant to be a threat against the military. That's because the US was never meant to have a standing army. That role was to be performed by the militia.

If 1% of gun owners fought back against confiscation the government would quickly run out of people willing to run confiscations.

I agree. If we had nukes that would be a good check against the military.
