MS employees used to be like that to, say 10 years ago. It just a stage Amazon just like MS ten or so years ago is going though a culture shift from seeing its self as a scrappy start up to a big company. IBM was way worse back in the day they had company rally songs. I know the Amazon cult thing is a pain but it will pass.

I feel like everyone I know at Amazon hates it and is just counting the days until their stock vests and they can quit.

The way I hear it: They usually spend >60 hours a week working. If you spend that much time working there, it's the only thing you have to talk about.

I've not experienced them being 'culty' so to speak, but I think I know what you're talking about. Their work environment is pretty casual, cool, and they're all working on really interesting projects (if you are into that kind of nerd thing.. I know I am). If I worked there, I'd probably be excited and talking about it a lot, too. I think emrcickray is right, it will probably pass here pretty soon once their growing pains are over.

That's the thing though, if you work in the industry locally you probably know that not all groups at amazon are very cool. They call it slaveship.com for a reason. This post (archived from the other place) describes it pretty well. https://archive.is/TdHJr

There are tons of cool companies to build software for in the area, and most treat employees better than amazon. Casual and cool environment is the default for software jobs, so that is no different than any other company doing similar work. In fact, many other companies have more pleasant environments with more amenities, where they don't work you to death. Given all of that it is pretty weird how gung ho just the people at that company are. emrcickray is probably right and it is a phase that will hopefully pass. Or it could be Stockholm syndrome I guess.

i think it depends on who you know; I know many people who work at amazon/fb/google and they're not like that :/
