This makes sense. There seem to be quite consistent moral lessons that every culture interested. Stuff like the golden rule, be loyal to those you care about, don't be greedy, keep your promises etc... Many of those fairy tales had moral lessons tied to them and it's easier to teach through story than through just lecture so I can totally see the popular fairy tales lasting a long time
So many of the European tales centered on the following: Kids, stay the eff out of the damn woods. I assume "you might get lost" is a harder sell than witches, ogres, and other magical bad guys.
Doesn't surprise me one bit. We could talk before we could write. Stories have always been told. Without writing a story down, a story changes every time it is told. Good stories stick, bad stories fade. Things we didn't understand, we attributed to (superstition towards) supernatural beings.

Interesting - it sounds like it should be related, so I'm surprised Jack O'Lantern isn't mentioned there.
