It also makes up about 27% of our universe, while normal matter (things you can touch and see) makes up only 5%. The reason we believe dark matter exists is because the amount of matter in galaxies isn't enough to have them form from gravity or even keep them together. So there must be other "stuff" there that we haven't detected yet. We don't know how to describe it, or even what it does other than it is affected by gravity, so we call it dark matter.
