Apparently it was necessary to officially quantify this information, unfortunate as that fact may be. Would be great if this leads toward minimizing sensationalism, but somehow I don't see that happening.

Suicide is contagious as well.

Suicide isn't a crime. It's a personal choice that people should be allowed to make without interference from selfish, ill-advised "do-gooders." Blocking the person from taking their life doesn't change the reasons why they wanted to in the first place. A person gets out of the insane asylum, he's still unemployed and feels worthless. Why not let him alleviate his suffering, especially with 100 million people out of work and the numbers only going to go up with automation and outsourcing/foreign labor import?

Murder is bad not because of the ten commandments or karma in the afterlife, but because of the concept of sovereign property rights that this nation was founded upon applied to the physical person. It violates the sovereign body. It's basically described as non-consensual death.

I don't think suicide is something that is necessarily worth "preventing" per se, as in blocking the person from doing the action. He owns his life (or should) and ought to have the right to decide what he wants to do with it. The way to prevent suicides is to alleviate the conditions that cause people to evaluate their life as not worth living, not to deny them their sovereign body right to reject "natural" longevity. If those conditions cannot be alleviated then basically you have to just step back rather than force the person to suffer an insufferable existence. Mental-health laws need to be rewritten to remove the language about "harm to oneself". Harm to others is the problem that should be prevented. Not self-determination in terrible circumstances that the person just doesn't have the threshold to withstand.

Yeah, if we could make 'social contagion' a household term, that'd be pretty cool. It might be hard what with all the stupid-tagions floating around though.

I will just lead to hiding nigger crime and highlighting the occasional white guy that snaps. That is all this will lead to.

It would be interesting to see if mass media has this effect on other things like teen pregnancy, drug usage, and the like.

Well shows like Teen Mom had an effect on teen pregnancy. I dated a girl who was desperate to get on that show. I don't know if you'd consider that mass media. If it's something that can make you famous, there is someone that's going to do it.

Had a similar scenario myself here in the UK, it's incredibly irresponsible on behalf of the media to encourage bad behaviour like they do.

I don't know if you'd consider that mass media

It's one show, but it, and people trying to get onto the show, got a lot of attention from mass media

When the TV show Degrassi started i thought about that. I'm sure it was well intended to help teens (mostly girls) be comfortable with their sexuality, but when teens are watching a show where teens are fucking everyone and their neighbor, not the teens not having rampant amounts of cassual sex feel like they are the odd ones out. Whether it be by being a prude or being unwanted.

We need more funding for that. We only got the 400 millions to determine if mass killings are more frequent.

They even tried to create an association between Jimmy the Joker and lack of social media participation, implying that people who don't have Facebook profiles would be candidates for a psychological profile of isolated and paranoid murderers.

That's like trying to paint people who don't have an iPhone as Ted Kaczynski.

Not that the media will do anything. More shootings means more news to report which means more money.

...and more fodder for the gun-control hysterics. They need someone to blame and something to be done, because you can't legislate stupid out of existence (well, OK, Germany tried in the '30s by sterilizing the clinically retarded, but we're talking everyday stupid here, not potatoes and autistics with a genetic disease).

The more they blame "Games" the larger than life they draw out "Gamergate" and other game related scandals. The further from this truth they try to lead us.
