Yup. That's why I think public funding for universities to do independent research is very important. However (and I've noticed), many university researchers aren't exactly apprehensive when it comes to receiving outside financing/sponsorship/benefits. I think it's a bad culture that people aren't publishing their negative study results more often, as they contain valuable data for other researchers as well.
Do you remember the whole Hwang Woo-Suk incident? I think that was the turning point for me to be very skeptical of any studies, no matter how credible they may seem. He had the whole world fooled for quite some time.
