Vitrification occurs when the molten minerals cool so rapidly that they become what is known as an amorphous solid, such as obsidian. At the other end, the exact same minerals could, if given a much longer time to cool much more slowly, form quartz crystals. In-between, we have granite, which cooled almost as slowly as quartz, and we have basalt, which cooled almost as quickly as obsidian.
That black volcanic glass is obsidian. We can see basalt forming in Hawaii in real time for fuck's sake. What is in the fucking lunchables you kids are eating that you haven't learned a damn thing even with over $14,000/year per student in cost? The waters of Lethe in a little juice box? To watch quartz crystals and granite forming you'd have to have your head stuck deep underground for a long period of time generally, but they've been cultured in labs. It's just basic Geology you gormless idiot.
