The title is misleading. They didn't find a region that is named Cthulhu. How should they know, that someone already named it anyway? It's only called that informally and this name won't persist as an official name.

It may or may not persist. But the great thing about language is that humans make it.
The best example of this is that the "Valley of the Mariners" was adopted as the official name of a geographical feature on Mars, albeit in a latinized form.
How do you say Cthulhu in Latin? ;)
