It's amazing to see how big the terrain features are in comparison to the planetoid itself!

I hope this is a compressed photo and there is better imagery of Hydra coming.

It was exhilarating hearing NASA received the 'phone home' last night and now this makes it even better!

It is amazing that when I was a kid we would talk about the idea of a sort of Planet X, or tenth planet beyond Pluto, but we (children) never even heard of Charon. Having learned something about astronomy since then, I know there won't likely be a tenth planet (heck, were down to eight now). To have actual photos a dwarf planet I never even knew it existed as child is incredible.

In January stories ran about two potential planets possibly larger than Earth that might be looming in the fringes of the solar system.

Covered by countless news sources. I chose The Guardian because I liked the formatting and image. Heh.

That's no moon

No... that's definitely a moon.

So there is the SW joke. But arguably, its not a moon. The barycenter of Pluto/Charon is not within Pluto. So they should probably be considered a binary system(?). Though there are times where that is true of the Sun... so I dunno. Tell the IAU to figure it out.

I can't get behind pronouncing it "Sharon" as most astronomers do, I'm sticking with "Care-on" like the Styx boatman :-)

I totally expected a large photo of the word CHARON. Guess this isn't that other site.
