How is this news? Humans are hypergamous. In lieu of any social norms or religions women will flock to the alpha male, but who "the alpha male" is will change from month to month as:
The old alpha male dies defending the tribe from a bear
The old alpha male is defeated in combat
The old alpha male grows too old and weak
A new male discovers some technology that enables him to more efficiently gather resources then the previous alpha male
A new male enters the tribe from outside and brings with him wealth or power
etc
There have been countless studies that show the SINGLE most important aspect in whether a woman will find a man attractive is whether other women find him attractive. Women want to know they're getting "the best" man, and they judge that based on how many other women want him. This means that women will congregate around one or a small group of men. These men, on the other hand, will have harems of women.
If this is the successfully reproductive strategy then you're naturally going to select for men who like groups of women. And what happens when a heterosexual man's opposite-sex partner is attracted to other women? The man has the opportunity for groups of women.

Is this not common sense at this point?
