Ridiculous!

99% of very black tongue is NOT from "rotting food growing in elongated filiform papillae" most of 99% of the time in modern world it is from things similar to Pepto Bismol !

Bismuth subsalicylate is the active ingredient and when it combines with trace amounts of sulfur in saliva, especially if you are unconscious sleeping, it turns VERY DARK and forms Bismuth sulfide:
