It's just another form of animal testing. If you've ever used any type of pharmaceutical you've benefited from it and incentivized it.
Years ago I read somewhere that they were trying to create animals without brains so they could be experimented on without causing suffering. I can't find an article on it now though.

There are currently computer simulations and alternative methods that do not entail wrongful imprisonment, torture and death for non humans. The expense of switching over the laboratories isn't something that big pharma will do without being legally forced.

I don't really think those are adequate and I doubt you do either.
We need more advanced biotechnology. Bio engineered lab rats without brains.
Or better yet human bodies without brains. Those would be the ultimate test subjects. That would solve the problem of organ donors too. I bet someone would make sub-sentient sex cyborgs as well......
