The Higgs Boson supposedly imbues elementary particles (elementary particles make up atoms) with mass, and they've been trying to "see" it for a while now. By seeing that it broke down into quarks (other elementary particles) they know for sure it's there. The Higgs Boson is the last elementary particle we don't know really anything about, and it's probably the most important.
