You get short on magnesium by avoiding greens. Eat your fucking salad nitwits.

Foods high in magnesium include almonds, bananas, beans, broccoli, brown rice, cashews, egg yolk, fish oil, flaxseed, green vegetables, milk, mushrooms, other nuts, oatmeal, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, soybeans, sunflower seeds, sweet corn, tofu, and whole grains.

That's the main problem with our culture - too much meat and processed foods. For millions of years, humans have been eating mostly the vegetables they could grow and gather, and supplementing with any meat they could get. But meat is expensive to buy and hard to hunt.

A healthy diet is supposed to be mostly vegetables and grains.

I don't know where you derive your "supposed to be" from anything that you said prior.

Meat is awesome.

Numerous studies have shown that "grains are good for us". This is true, but the benefit does not come from the grain, it comes from the bran. The grain itself is just empty calories (starch). The problem with western grains is that the bran is laced with pesitcides and herbicides. They are best avoided.

And magnesium also helps to reduce serum calcium levels, which is wrongly recommended as a dietary supplement. Elevated calcium is related to heart disease, breast cancer, osteoporosis, among other things. It is well-documented in peer-reviewed literature but the calcium deficiency myth is perpetuated for a reason that is beyond me.

Doctors don't try to get to the root of absorption issues. A patient presenting symptoms of calcium deficiency would just be prescribed a calcium supplement.

magnesium & potassium & iodine

All found in the ocean at the same ratios we need in our body (because we came from the ocean).

Kelp and (unprocessed) sea salt are both excellent sources of these nutrients, and in the right ratio.

Sea salt doesn't have iodine. You have to get iodized salt.

Proper iodine nullify and negative effects you may get from phytoestrogens.

Most of The UK is iodine deficient as our salt is not iodized

If you are in the UK get some himalayan salt

Ever put iodine on your skin? I've read that your body will absorb iodine through your skin at the rate it needs to.

Same with magnesium in the form of magnesium chloride "oil" or epsom salts.

Magnesium is taken up faster through the skin than through the digestive tract. If you are deficient, baths can speed things up. Even with this, though, it can take 6 months or more to get your body up to optimum levels.

Do black people who come to northern Europe automatically develop vitamin d deficiencies due to their high levels of melanin? There's a reason we're as white as we are, and why we need tar like sun cream when heading for the Costa, so presumably the reverse is true for blacks leaving their natural habitat to visit our welfare system.

[–] CannedShrooms 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

Yes, they do. In Northern Europe it's often not as bad due to the vitamin D rich diet, but in other high latitude countries (Canada, for example) it's a big problem. Well, health problem anway.

Thanks for the confirmation. Wrt the influence of diet I recall reading that because scandos historically had fish as a core part of their diet whereas the Irish didn't to the same degree was why scandos tan so well despite being so fair skinned normally, while Irish/scotch just get cremated in the sun. Never verified the hypothesis, but was an interesting angle I thought.
