I thought this was already acknowledged as fact. When I had my first child 17 years ago, the doctor didn't say I could drink, but only a little wine in the evening. He said no alcohol. So did the "What to Expect When Expecting" book.

I've heard the "one glass of wine a day maximum" thing a number of times, a pregnant lady I worked with about a year ago said the same thing from her doctor.

I also heard this, but also alongside the "only late in the pregnancy" advice.

Doctors used to advise one beer a day for expectant mpms. Depending on your age most everybody's moms and everybody's dads were beer fed in utero.

I guess this explains the current political system we live in.

Anybody actually read this garbage click-bait?

It was an animal study done by exposing rats to ethyl alcohol vapor during one 6 hour period of their gestation.

Extrapolating this to an entire human gestation would be absolutely fucking retarded.

Even I get this, and I'm retarded, (my mom drank while she was pregnant).

I've come to expect it on Voat. In many ways this site is superior to plebbit, but this subverse reminds me most often that it's far closer to it than I'd like. I'd say the vast majority of the things posted here are clickbait-tier titles of articles either A) the poster didn't bother to read, B) the author of the article completely fucking misunderstood or misinterpreted scientific studies or data, or C) both of the aforementioned.

I instinctively wish to hold this place to a higher standard but I keep seeing reminders of why my expectations should be tempered.

Yes, sadly, especially with regard to A, though it's not unique to here, and is largely the problem of the increased speed of transmission without filter we see with modern technology.

Anyway for those curious, here and here are links to the actual study, and here is an excerpt [emphasis mine]:

In conclusion, this study demonstrates that G12 mPAE produces anxiogenic responses in male offspring during adolescence, but not in adulthood. Surprisingly, this exposure produces no effect in female offspring at either age. Studies are warranted to identify neurobiological mechanisms associated with the age-dependent expression of anxiety-like behaviors in males and resilience in females which may be altered by exposure during this gestational period.

Thats because there are ethical reasons why they would not do the study on humans. Anyone who does a study like "we took 100 pregnant human women and fed them varying levels of alcohol to see how retarded it would make their children" would have to find a new career.

[–] peacegnome 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

it could be self reported, like they take 1000 women, and whenever they drink they note how much and when.

I'm not even talking about that you fucking retard. The title is extremely misleading. Read the article you fucking faggot, and see if the conclusion you would draw from the experiment is anything like the title of the article.

Can't trust a retard. Do you think that blood is handled differently in rats and humans? Do rats have some sort of filtration ability different to us?

Read about the observed negative effects in the article. What were they?

Probabilistic versus definite? This study is saying that even small amounts of alcohol produce definite negative effects.

even a small to moderate amount of alcohol exposure produces significant amounts of anxiety in offspring, lasting through adolescence and into adulthood.

[–] tame 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

No, the study is saying that "small to moderate" amounts of alcohol, whatever that means, produces anxiety-like behaviour, whatever that means, in rats. Taking that finding, stripped of any meaningful quantities, and extrapolating it to "small amounts of alcohol during pregnancy produces significant negative effects in humans" and from there to "there is no safe amount of alcohol for humans during pregnancy" is totally unwarranted pop-sci sensationalism.

Now, I'm not saying you should go get smashed when pregnant. But a sip of champagne at a wedding isn't going to doom your offspring forever.

Fuck it... let's just encourage people to speed or drink when they're pregnant. Great comment. Not sure who's more retarded, you or the people that upvoted you.

I don't think so :) until the fetus establishes a blood supply connection to the mother you should be safe enough.

I wonder sometimes the percentage of pregnancies have alcohol as a factor.

Maybe I should ask the government for money for a study.
