So, Google's using 49 qubits, comprised of ions, within a chip. On the day of their presentation an international team of Russian and Americans say they have a 51 qubit computer, comprised of atoms trapped in "laser cells".

How the hell do "laser cells" even scale up? These machines already require super low temps to operate. At what scale does the law of diminishing returns kick in, where there's more power needed to keep the "cold atoms" in place vs actually computing?

It kicked in almost instantly. The computations take almost no power in the first place. Almost everything is spent on cooling.
