Things that sound less scary than they are: "safe mode"

Now pretend your iPhone costs a billion dollars and takes five years to boot up.

Pretty much for us all man. All these things we are hopeful for and they come crashing down (pun was in bad taste)

Let's just hope the engineers manage to get NH back up and running - 9 days isn't that much, especially when it takes light ~4,5 hours to travel to New Horizons from Earth.

Well fuck if it only takes 4.5 hours to travel there just send a tech up, I think we can authorize the overtime on this one.

I was also considering the frustration the team must be feeling. It doesn't sound like a ton of pictures were planned but that loss of data, after a lot of time and planning, would certainly be upsetting.

This is like the plot for a horribly hilarious and suspenseful movie starring the cast from 'The IT Crowd.'

You forgot to mention tragic.

Isn't it completely amazing that we can essentially control an RC science-mobile from 4.9 billion km? I love watching how quickly advances can be made, it's a shame NASA is always having to fight for their budget.

And when you think about how long ago this was built, it's not even cutting edge even more. I freaking love space exploration.

Right? Same with the original Gemini and Apollo missions. My smartphone has much more computing power than what was used to land on the moon. I can't wait to see what the next few decades have in store for us.

Even though I don't really support government space exploration from a fiscal side, I still think it's really cool to get all these data about Pluto and its moons.

I love the idea of privatized space exploration, it's a shame the past few missions have ended poorly.

Does anyone know the engineering details behind their computer system?

So they had the same problem in 2007 but resumed normal ops in 2 days. I guess it will be alright.

I'm sure NASA does, probably the NSA too.

How come that it happens after all those years?

Such bad timing for a mistake. It literally had years before this week that it would've been better to mess up.

Are there other similar cases?

My guess is that its been just doing its flying and moving around part for that long. Now its getting close to Pluto the systems for monitoring etc are all coming online. There might have been an issue with these parts that were not needed for many years.

I am terrified with every deep space mission that there will be failures. I cant imagine the awful feeling if you were apart of a team whos mission fails. I hope the best for New Horizons I cant wait to see Pluto.
