Wind power is feasible only in specific places with very specific conditions. Solar is awesome but it does get dark on occasion around here, so you become reliant on energy storage techniques, some of which at scale are pretty bad ass, like pumped storage... but those, like wind, require specific geography. If we can get energy storage that scales well... Solar would be great since it can be put pretty much anywhere. This is where subsidies come in. Fossil fuels (including natural gas) are already "there", but we're dumping carbon into the atmosphere that has been locked away forever. There's not much economic incentive to figure out energy storage for "renewables" until fossil fuels cross a certain cost barrier. A shame, like welfare, we can't be a little more pointed in making sure the right people get ahold of research dollars and whatnot.
