I think FB is a tool whereby people COULD try to hide from their own problems, thus making said problems worse. The tool could as easily have been alcohol, drugs, exercise, or food.
But FB can be a more dangerous tool because it enables people to create this fake facade of their lives, and the users eventually start to believe the lie, thus forgetting what's even more important: personal growth.
The instant feedback of constant connection to the internet (and such sites) can be addictive for some people, but, I think, especially to those looking for external validation in the form of Likes.
