A black hole is never "dormant", it's always active.

How reliable is this source? I have no knowledge of UK journalship, so I can't even decide if I should read it or not. Headline sounds weird at best. Why would I panic about it? Like there is anything I can do about it.

So what is the reason for the 26 year lull? The article and links don't explain why they think the lull happened.

Just no mass near it. A black hole is never "dormant", it just runs out of nearby mass.

That would have been my thought but the articles say its been feeding off a nearby star. They don't say anything about the star being almost used up which might explain intermittent mass being available. I just think its interesting they didn't even put forth a theory for the gap.

Wikipedia:

Other outbursts occurred in 1938 and 1956, and the outbursts are probably caused by material piling up in a disk around the black hole until a tipping point is reached

So you've got material piling up in a disk orbiting the black hole, and when the disk gets too full there's some kind of instability and it starts wobbling, material falls into the black hole, kablammo.

Like those goddamn carnival machines which pile up coins on a little shelf until they eventually fall out (but never when I'm around).
