I wonder if we can accelerate the development of primates by teaching them how to use tools, language and logic to be more competitive in their natural environment.

Can't teach them if they don't have the capacity to learn and understand the things you are trying to teach. And how the hell do you teach "logic"? Brains aren't magical HDDs capable of of doing human equivalent of "download more ram", as well as other hardware. The only way to accelerate it is though selective breeding.

Well there's that one gorilla that knows sign language, and can communicate relatively complex and vaguely abstract ideas through it.

But do we really want to uplift other species? There's already way too many humans around, could you imagine trying to figure out how to share the world with another sentient species, that has an effectively alien thought process?

Well, think how selfish that thought is

When we are also on the precipice of creating sentience in artificial intelligence.

We are going to experience a change in environment over the next century, and possibly the first true interaction of two separate sentient beings that can directly communicate. I find the concept fascinating, but at the same time disheartening, especially when so many people are so hostile to the idea of another sentience existing, when we already struggle to even understand another human being.

That's a stupid way of looking at things, why do you value our entire species?

Sounds good, let's do it with people too. Oh wait, everyone is too emotional and selfish right now.

Nah you just have to breed the intelligent ones in captivity and introduce wild females, get them pregnant, then re-release the females back into their normal group. Eventually over time the gene pool would shift towards the more intelligent genes (assuming the stupid apes don't just kill the smart ones.)

For some reason I thought the article was going to be about the black lives movement.

"stone age" implies making stone tools out of stone, and using stones in sophisticated ways, such as flint-tipped arrows, grinding stones, and stone axes. Breaking a coconut with a rock doesn't qualify.

Call us back when they discover fire and develop a spoken language or hand signs.

No, but his ancestors did. If you're going to be a strawman, at least try harder.

With the new found ability to craft stone, perhaps Brazil can hire additional labor to finish the Olympic stadiums on time.
