Traditionally one of the biggest advantages of consoles over PC has been that you can just pop in the game and play.

Actually, the original advantage of consoles over PCs was price : the hardware was usually aimed toward the cheapest possible hardware for the minimum requirements of the games of the day.
And for a long time, dedicated hardware was faster and cheaper.

Now, not so much : computing power is cheap and creating new chips is pretty complex and expensive.
Meanwhile games continue to become more and more complex, trying to look like the games that aim for next year's PCs.
All that's left is the manufacturer's total control of the platform.

( Meanwhile, mobiles games are still expected to be simple and mostly work, so they're really cheap to make even if one cannot sell them for as much... )
