I think it was Sony and Microsoft that ruined consoles. By repeatedly screwing their users and lowering the bar with each new console they released. To me it seems like each of them made great first and second attempts at consoles, but the third time around they just assume that their console will be a success and thats when they start screwing over their customers. The current generation is just rediculous and screws the customers even more, so now their making upgraded versions of their current gen consoles to screw their users even more.

Actually, the original advantage of consoles over PCs was price : the hardware was usually aimed toward the cheapest possible hardware for the minimum requirements of the games of the day.
And for a long time, dedicated hardware was faster and cheaper.
Now, not so much : computing power is cheap and creating new chips is pretty complex and expensive.
Meanwhile games continue to become more and more complex, trying to look like the games that aim for next year's PCs.
All that's left is the manufacturer's total control of the platform.
( Meanwhile, mobiles games are still expected to be simple and mostly work, so they're really cheap to make even if one cannot sell them for as much... )
