I was a JW for about five years when I was a teenager, and my mom's still in the faith. I took it very seriously, as one did. I can tell you from experience that whatever you've heard, both good and bad, is probably true.
My feelings about them is that they're a cult. Their closest analog is the Mormons. Both religions began at about the same time (Joseph Smith began having visions a few decades before Charles Taze Russell began his Association of Bible Students) and in the same place, the "burnt over" region of New York. Both began to experience a great deal of animosity from outside, but their response was very different. The Mormons tend to be very outwardly receptive, welcoming people in for any reason, and very friendly. The JWs, however, while they talk to the public and invite people to their meetings, DO NOT socialize with anyone outside of their religion. That is a big difference between the two.
A similarity however is that both are Arianist faiths, i.e, neither believes in God as a trinity. They both believe in God and his only begotten son Jesus, and they're pretty damn clear about that, but they find no evidence of the trinity in the bible.
The Mormons are nice people and I like them. I know several as friends. I wish I could say the same about the JWs. Besides being standoffish, the religion tends to attract a certain personality that I find annoying and creepy.
If there's anything else you want to know, please ask.

Generally nice people, I offer them some water and ask them if they would like to use the washroom when they stop by my house. They always try to get me out to their church, but I tell them that God's love has no limit, and to say that there is a limited number of places in Heaven is to say there is a limit. So, I will continue to do what I do, and they can continue doing what they're doing and I wish them the best.
They know their scripture very well but are really annoying and aggressive about it. Start "whatabouting" with them and watch the convo get heated quickly.

They don't celebrate birthdays and holidays and such and believe there is limited capacity in heaven.

They're always nice, but they seem to find their way up our long driveway on Saturdays. Can be difficult to get rid of.

They behave like a cult because they are one

Any group that goes door to door to sell their religion is a cult.
