So right now I have no technical knowledge (coding etc) of the Raspberry Pi, although I know the potential capabilities of it. However, for a while I have been thinking about the possibility of making one into a Dash-Cam setup for both front and back windows, plus I logically assume there would also be the potential to add more cameras.
There are plenty of off-the-shelf dash-cams you can buy, but they are all very bulky which take up dash space and generally look untidy. This becomes a bigger issue when you want to record both front and rear views as you then need two separate cameras, power feeds, mounting points etc.
So, the idea would be to have a R-Pi in the centre of the vehicle and small, tidy cameras at the front and rear attached to it. The perfect setup would record both cameras for as long / large as the SD card (or separate portable drive?) could hold, then overwrite the oldest data when space runs out.
Ideally, the system needs to have the ability to be powered on and off by the ignition to save the vehicle battery power and restart the recording process automatically without user input.
What are your thoughts, is it a good idea / easy / hard / expensive etc?
