Humans were rewarded by evolution for liking non-human companionship.

Though people do use pets as substitute children, wanting a non-human animal companion and your own offspring aren't generally competing desires in most humans. I think it's safe to say having both is ideal.

I agree. Having both is definitely good.

I think the trend for "pet parents" is very recent.
