This has been known for quite some time. I spent a while looking for it, but I'm unable to find it, though a year (or two) ago a individual was snooping his own network traffic to see what his Smart TV was sending and to where. I recall at the time it was revealed that a lot of personal information and largeish data streams were being sent to Samsung or Sony or whoever the creator of his specific Smart TV was.
About six months ago I was in the market for a new TV to replace my old decrepit box TV that I didn't want to replace because it worked and that I didn't use that often. After the remote sensor broke it became a PITA to use. I asked a couple buddies with newer TVs for suggestions, and they all though I was crazy when I told them I didn't want a smart TV and when I told them why.
Well, looks like I wasn't wrong.
In the end I opted for just a regular, 37" Sharp LCD TV. No 'smart TV' features. If I want to watch Netflix, I stream it from my computer to it. I don't need to see the weather, traffic stats, get notified of new emails, watch YouTube, use Facebook or any of that shit on my TV... I have a remote control.. I don't need to give my TV voice commands. All these features exist for no apparent reason, and if you want to watch other media sources on your TV such as YouTube, Hulu, Vimeo, etc... just buy a Roku or build a cheap media PC to connect to it.
