Never really used my radio since I got licensed a few years ago... Especially since a lot of police are switching to encrypted digital coms so there's nothing interesting to listen to. But with the hurricane coming this is great info. Thanks!

Weather is about all I use mine for. Not only NOAA but we have a local storm watch group that uses a repeater near me. That can be fun to monitor.

Unfortunately my 4W portable isn't strong enough to hit the repeater, but I receive traffic (when there is any, which is rare).

You can still talk to people as long as if you find a close enough repeater, can even be done with most handy-talkies. NOAA is good, and to listen to the encrypted digital frequencies, you need a laptop or desktop.
