Plan A: Buy a lowboy semi and D9, she can drive around and destroy other preppers bunkers and raid their stash. Plan B: Stock up on hot sauce and become a cannibal. Nice old lady can lure people in, one wack with a machete, dinner! Just sayin.

I've looked a few times, they come to about $6-8 each regardless. Sopackco makes the american ones. Buy new stock. MREs are stable for a while, they will go bad though. The boxes on mine recommend colder storage like 60° and they will keep for 5-10 years. You can freeze them to go longer. I'd have her buy a box and eat one a month to make sure she can stomach them and to get in the habit of rotating them. They don't bother me any but they can cause some congestion on southbound traffic. Bonus points if she likes the omelette one.

MREs have a relatively short shelf life compared to other storage foods.

Had family friends that waited out Katrina. His advice after was: " Have food you wouldn't rather die then eat."

This is why I stockpile canned goods like spam. I can eat spam. But some MREs are vile. And I fuck up lentils badly. Rice gets bland. But I can cook bread like a boss with just yeast, flour, water and some sugar (honey, refined, molasses, not tried fruit yet but in the list).

Nothing beats fried spam though and that shelf life is enough to anticipate a medium term crisis (2 yr, although my total stockpile might only last 3 months on a family.

Good thinking. I bought some fancy spam but it had crappy shelf life. Maybe ill try original

. make sure you have water storage as well. Local water will be contaminated/ dangerous in most scenarios.

Dried fruits are very edible

Canned food lasts pretty much forever as long as the can isn't so rusty that you're not brushing the rust off. The only reason to get MREs is because you want something quaint, interesting, thematic, or you just really like them.
