Yeah, I got a kindle just for this purpose. Of course I keep it stocked with novels too, I'm a reading kind of guy. And I use it every day. So it's a win no matter what. That plus I got a cell without service and highly locked down as a backup for apps, gps, etc. You don't need cell data to use the gps, just for any map data that goes with it and there are downloadable maps that use gps.

I just found a gps/beacon combo device last night I want to research. Until then, I'm using Sygic. Download maps by state, gps, directions, free. Still need cell data to get routes but gps + maps offline = win.

The national park system also has a phone app with downloadable topo maps and a cell based emergency beacon. Also free. It's called "PocketRanger"
