MacDonald was an alcoholic, corrupt, a prick and a British puppet. He was no Washington.

"He drank heavily, and in 1873 was voted out during the Pacific Scandal, in which his party took bribes from businessmen seeking the contract to build the Pacific Railway"

Macdonald is viewed by many Canadian historians, and by many ordinary Canadians, as an exceptionally clever, very charming politician who possessed little else -- no vision, no creativity, and no ideas but the tactical stratagems of a pragmatist and opportunist-as well as being corrupt and cynical, and a drunk

So what? Lots of people are scumbags, but he's part of Canada's heritage, and helped build the country, like it or not.

Why would one expect a Canadian leader, especially that far back, to be a Washington? Canadian identity is arguably based at its core on a rejection of the revolution. They're a bunch of American loyalists with frogs annoying them.

Churchill was so drunk all the time he had special suits tailored for him so that he could be changed out of them rapidly whenever he shat himself. Still gets statues.
