I'll take a stab and to actually expand on this article's sentiment (tl;dr political party realignment) and carry the conversation forward.
[Party realignment] It would force both parties to shift their values, too complex to lay in a post but off top of my head, L towards education, infrastructure and R towards less religious rhetoric, less foreign wars, Both towards actually following the constitution - free speech, guns, privacy.
[The voters] An actual debate would be amazing. From my view, there'd be no contest who the winner would be. How and why you agree with either candidate depends on who you are, where you come from, how you see the world, what your vision is for humanity, and how capable you are of seeing the details. Your gestalt. And also of course, a big part of all this, is how old you are - are you younger with the energy to execute the ideals and dreams of a generation? Or are you older and want to maintain your way of life for yourself and your family, and destroy anything that may threaten that?

Somebody is clearly a Berniebot; there's no other reason to write off the effects of his nomination on the party like that and the refusal to acknowledge the increasing liberalization of gun rights would seem to indicate the requisite blindness to the actual will of the American people
As much as the Republican Party's existence is on the line, it's got nothing to do with being full of old codgers who refuse to accept change and everything to do with the people getting angry at the ruling elites. The perception that it's gone farther right than the Democratic Party's gone left is almost entirely based on the sudden emergence of the Tea Party and now Donald Trump driving the rightward drift and the lack of such events driving the leftward drift; the Establishment Party tends to lean left as well, so the disparate means was pretty much inevitable.
